Le Phantom Ship est le vestige d'une cheminée volcanique vieille de 400 000 ans qui a résisté à la formidable explosion du Mont Mazama (7 700 ans) qui recouvrait les vestiges de ce paléovolcan. L'explosion du Mont Mazama a creusé une caldeira circulaire de 10 kilomètres de diamètre et de 1000 mètres de profondeur qui s'est rempli d'eaux de fonte des neiges au point de former un lac de 600 mètres de profondeur qui ne laisse dépasser cette formation géologique que de la hauteur d'un immeuble de 17 étages... Vu depuis le rebord de la caldeira, qui surplombe la surface du lac de plus de 400 mètres à cet endroit, ce "vaisseau fantôme" ressemble pourtant à un jouet, mais le bateau de croisière qui passe à proximité permet de donner l'échelle.
