Pharaoh Thutmose III sphinx

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

Black granite Sphinx of Split is 3500 years old. It was ordered to transport by Emperor Diocletian from conquered Egypt as a

war trophy, decoration for the palace, and the guardian of his future mausoleum in it.

It is unique because it has human hands and fingers, not a lion's paws and claws. Nor the lion's ears. Stretched fingers of

both hands hold a pot offering sacrificial meal or a drink to the god Amun. In addition, there are hieroglyphics with

cartoushes on its base, which is also unique among sphinx desplays. The inscriptions refer to the conquered peoples of

Africa and Asia under the rule of Thutmose III (reign: 1479–1425 BCE, 18th Dynasty of Egypt).

Diocletian, as a ruler and military leader, which was also Thutmose III in a time distance of 18 centuries, successfully fought in

Asia and Africa, too. In addition, the Roman emperor was admirer of Hellenistic and ancient Egyptian architecture and art.
