I remember this tree from my childhood in the UK. When was the tree topped? Such a shame, but probably dying anyway. Incidentally, my grandfather was driving a bus - you know those old open-top double deckers - and he passed under that tree. Right under one of the low stretched-out branches. And he swept all the passengers off the top - he looked back to see them sitting in the road!
