The marginal area of the Atacama Desert, that is, the area to the south of the city of Copiapó (27º 18’ S) has several tens millimeters of annual precipitation and is covered by widely dispersed scrubs and grasses. The cone-shaped landform in the center of the photograph is an alluvial cone mainly formed by recurrent debris flows. Photographed on August 29, 2003.
アタカマ砂漠のうち、アタカマ地方（第３地方）の中心地コピアポー市（南緯27度18分）より南では、冬季に数10mm程度の雨が降り、写真のように、疎らに草本や灌木が生えている。このため、アタカマ砂漠の縁辺帯と言われる。写真中央に見られる地形は、小さな谷の出口にできた急傾斜な扇状地で、沖積錐と呼ばれるもの。おもに豪雨時に発生する土石流の堆積で形成される。2003年8月29日撮影。
