211.アタカマ砂漠高地の牧場　Pastures in a height of the Atacama Desert

Parts of the Atacama Desert higher than 2500 meters above sea level are under the highland desert climate. The annual precipitation of several tens millimeters make it possible to develop a dispersed vegetation. This photograph shows a pasture at 3150 meters high in the valley of the Paipote, a right bank tributary of the Copiapó River. Grasses grow both on the salty valley bottoms and on valley slopes with dispersed scrubs. A lot of cattle lane is found on slopes. Judged from the absence of cattle this can be a temporal pasture for transhumance. Photographed on August 30, 2003.

アタカマ砂漠でも、標高2500mを超えると高地砂漠気候の地帯に入る。冬を中心に年間数十mmの降雨があり、疎らな草本や灌木が見られるようになる。たとえば、標高2850mのポトレリジョス鉱山では、5月～8月を中心に、年に60mm程度の降雨がある。写真は、コピアポー川右岸の支流、パイポテ沢(Qebrado de Paipote)を遡った標高3150ｍの谷間にある牧場。塩類が析出した谷底にも草が生え、灌木が点在する斜面にも、季節によっては草が茂り、家畜の道(cattle lane)が多数発達している。家畜の影が見えないところからみて、移牧用の季節的な牧場かもしれない。2003年8月30日撮影。
