Nav Fac GDT "T" building. Worked here as a Radioman for 3 years.
Boy how this changed from when I served at the
NavFac Grand Turk back in '56-57. It was all
Quoset Huts back then. We had a simple two wire
fence and donkeys wandering around the place.
Great to see these pictures... thanks for
posting them.
Well the Quoset Hut is still inside of the "T" building. Well it was when I worked there. The transmitter room was in that part of the building on the left end.
I was stationed there as a RM as well back in "76".It was a great time for me. was supposed to go Barbados from there, but got "BLANKED" by a bull ensign and transferred to the Mount Whitney. But my times on the island were memorable. I took "wacky-macky" to Antigua. Flew to Barbados a few times. Hit all the little islands on the way down.
I was stationed at NAVFAC 104 from July 1964 until July 1965. Was a HM3 at the time and worked with HM1 Ernest Eli Gerald (sp) from RI and HM1 Roberts. Wonder what became of Jim Hirshman, Joseph Strickler Johnson, Sam Oates, all CB's and a YN named Al Pabst. I remember playing Hearts some weekends all night.
I was stationed on Grand Turk from 1977 until it closed in 1979. Some of my most memorable times in the Navy was spent there. I have a panorama of the base that I took from the top of the light house back in 78 or so. Finaly got the photos stitched togather, unfortunatly it is too large to upload, I will scan it in smaller and get it uploaded some time. Was anyone else out there on the decommisioning crew. I worked in the T building as an ET Bobby Bristoe
I was stationed on Grand Turk from Oct68 to Jul70 as a RM2 working in the Comm Center in the 'T' Bldg. I also operated a 'Ham Radio' station in the Spec Serv bldg, (adjacent to the swimming pool), running many phone patches for base personnel. More photos can be seen on the IUSSCAA website.......Tom Holcomb, K5AES, EX-VP5TH.
I was stationed at Grand Turk, NAVFAC 104, from Nov 1955 to Dec 1956. Great Duty... I arrived as an Ensign, and as Electronics Officer. For the last 6 months was acting exec. Very informal, all quonset huts, rather short hours as the work day ended about 3 pm, as I remember. Very casual uniform requirements. No swimming pool.
RUEBNEK JIM HAGEN - I was stationed there 2-68 until 2-69 there were also MIKE BALL - FRANK IANARILLI - GABBARD - JACK WESTON- KURTZ. DURING THE RAINY SEASON THE ROOF OF THE EM BARRACKS LEAKED SO BAD THERE WERE BUCKETS EVERYWHERE ON THE TOP FLOOR - AND FOR AWHILE THERE WERE SO MANY LAND CRABS DIGGING UNDER THE BUILDINGS THAT THEY OFFERED A BOUNTY ON KILLING THEM AND ENCOURAGED EVERYONE TO KILL THEM. THERE WAS A BLACK BIWI LADY WORKING IN THE EM CLUB NAMED ANNIE
I was Stationed there 71-72 - Lots of fond memories, like the Outdoor movies, the parties, touring downtown to visit the Pubs, and of course, renting a motorbike and raising hell. - kojack51@gmail.com
I was stationed at Grand Turk from February of 1968 to March of 1969. Ron Anderson, Jim Hagen and Tom Holcomb were there the same time I was. I was a sonar tech (made third class on Turk and can still recall getting my crow "tacked on" as I walked from the barracks to the chow hall). Don't recall Frank Ianarilli but then again I've forgotten a number of names over the years. I played guitar in the base band we had in those days . . we performed at the EM club and down at south base. Songs we played that I recall include "We Gotta get out of this Place", "Born to be Wild", "Get Outta my Life Woman" and "Pusher Man". Isolated duty in those days with lots of drinking. I would love to hear from any of the guys that were there with me and remember me. Thanks! Bill Bradley - fingall@caribsurf.com
Served (vacationed) on Grand Turk as a radioman 3rd class 1959-1960. Enjoyed my time there tremendously. Played softball at the Pan Am base, basketball on the blacktop court at the naval base, and was very surprised at the "tea time in the afternoon. I helped build the swimming pool next to the officers quarters. Would very much like to go back someday...
I was stationed on Grand Turk as an ETSN & ET3 from Sept 59 thru Sept 60 in the T building and also the Transmitter building. I also helped build the salt water pool next to the Officers Quarters. I remember a group of us taking a truck innertube with a piece of canvas strapped to it and going out and collecting longustas for the cooks to cook in the enlisted mess.
Hey guys, Bob Kostelecky EN3. I was there from July 1962 to aug.1963. I just missed John Glenn but I did see some of the dollar bills signed by him. I was there during the Cuba crises and saw one of the freighters carrying the missles eastbound and the next day she was westbound. Turned by the blockade. There was about 500 Marines at the air strip at that time and the Bewes were not vary happy about that.We started a small arms practice day on Tuesday every week. We had our own private guns, shotguns, pistols in the armory. Yes, snorkel diving for longusta was a lota of fun. When we had a really good supply of them the cooks would have them ready about midnight. At this time we had two small boats and a, I think a 5 hp motor. Before I left Turks though a new boat with twin Johnson motors arrived. Once got chewed about boat riding to the other Island. Guess we were tracked by the T-Building top secret thingys. For info to those that came after I left the shafts for the spear guns were bent by rather large things living around the coral heads. Did anyone tool any leather in the buildg where the short wave radio was? The chief eng., the skipper and I did a lot of that. We listened to bunches of CQ,CQ,CQ.
I played the drums in our band so on Sat. night at the pan nam base I had liberty until midnight. Did a lot of drinking at the em club along with the dogs. Ever see a drunk dog? So many good times on Turk I wanted to stay but my request got lost. So I was off to Norfolk with orders to the USS Preserver ARS-8. I watched a video on you tube made in 2013 and was rather disheartened as how the base looked after being closed, I believe in 1979. Would like to keep writing about the old mems. Think maybe I should write a book about it.
i was there 67-68. beatiful. loved walking to cockburn town. biwi's would stand along side the road waiting for and then say "down the road man?" as if waiting for a taxi. real paradise. shame to see the commercial bump.
