It's a Hotel, not a castle.

Thank you turbica and yellowroses for visiting and commenting. Upstate New York is a beautful and photogenic area, that is often overlooked by people who want to experience the City proper.

And yes, yellowroses, I know it's a hotel, but from my vantage point at the time, i felt it looked like a castle. In fact, it still does; but I thank you for clearing the record.

The Lake Mohonk Mountain House was built by the Quaker twins Albert and Alfred Smiley in 1870. When Albert was appointed to the board of Indian Commissioners, he became interested in the situation of American Indians - and in the shortness of the Commissioners' meetings. Thus he began inviting various "Friends of the Indian" to come as his guests to a several day meeting at this hotel each October. It became a very influential gathering for the development of policy.

My biographical subject, Isabel Crawford, attended two of the meetings. She said, "the whole affair from beginning to end with the wonderful surroundings made one wonder if the Heavenly Portals were not somewhere near."

Early in January we are going to splurge and spend one night here! But in January, it's not going to look like this spectacular view, Hank!

I didn't know that, Hank, in fact ...<chuckle>... there are quite a few John McConnels that got a Wikipedia mention, about which I know next to nothing...

...but another entry there caused another set of memories to come flooding back...

When John created Earth Day he celebrated it on the Vernal Equinox which is a truly Earth Day. In honor of John's original concept The United Nations celebrates Earth Day on the Equinox, and rings the Peace Bell at the moment the Sun crosses the Equator heading North.
