How did you get all those swallow(looks like them thats for sure) in the same place at the same time. great B/W.

Cal Kimola Brown on August 23, 2009

What on earth is going on there? It looks so ominous,I think I would have been a bit afraid under that sky!

Good Bird IDing Steve ! They are in fact swallows, mostly tree swallows like in this shot Cal posted last spring. They're starting their migration south, and they flock to Plum Island here by the THOUSANDS. It's pretty amazing. They fill the air and make it look smokey there are so many. Last week when I was in the area I was standing for this shot, a swarm (that's the only word I can think of that fits!) passed right over me. You could hear the wing beats as they flew by. The great news? They eat Mosquitos!!! So they've got a ready supply of food this summer, that's for sure. Here's a newspaper article about them.

But Dianne - his eagles would sure be happy at a ready food source of their own. ;)

And Cal - while the air was filled with them, and it was about at sunset, the sky color is also because the clouds of the outer bands of Hurricane Bill had also just reached the area, making for a really ominous light. It was a pretty cool afternoon!

Cool! Stan and Ollie get fertilized and the local birds of prey and earthbound hunters fatten up.

You need to clean your lens and quit blaming bird migration, Bits. Pretty cool shot, though.

Amazing shot, Bits! It looks like they darkened the sky.

Thanks Guy, n1w, and Norrel ! It's funny:people either look at this and say 'Wow! How Cooool!' or they recoil in horror and say 'OMG, that would be my worst nightmare! How could you stand there and take that??' It was interesting the day I got this shot. There was a group who arrived, and they all just stood there in awe with their arms out as a swarm flew over them, just like I did the first time I saw this.

I can understand some people's fear of being swallowed up.

And yet--no collisions!

someGuyinmasset on August 25, 2009

No, but the air-traffic-controllers are getting stressed.

Guy, did you ever see the old movie, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World? The air tower guy trying to talk Mickey Rooney and Buddy Hackett down would be about similar, I'd guess.

someGuyinmasset on August 25, 2009

That was b&w wasn't it? Probably not enough things blowing up to keep my attention.

It was, but the laffs would have kept you in it, Guy. Actually, there is a pretty good blowing-up scene in it, and a middle-of-nowhere gas station gets torn down by Jonathan Winters. You'd like it, I'd bet.

Are you sure it isn't Bud and Lou??

My vote got all swallowed up!!

Bits-n-Pieces on September 10, 2009

Thanks Jim!

funny - looking at this now, looks like Stan and Ollie could be someone about to swallow a cheeseburger!
