This is supposed to be an example of a Tyr-un-nos; a house of the night. In remote Wales someone could lay claim to land if they could build a house between sunset and sunrise and have smoke coming from the chimney. The extent of their plot was defined by how far they could throw an axe. While commonly used, especially among the slate miners in Snowdonia, there was no actual law permitting this.
