The Swiss Cottage Central Library is the central library of the public library service in the London Borough of Camden, and is housed in an architectural landmark building designed by Sir Basil Spence. It was first opened in 1964 at 88 Avenue Road, Swiss Cottage, London NW3 3HA. The centre was originally intended to provide a new Civic Centre for what was then the Metropolitan Borough of Hampstead with administration offices and a council chamber planned though with the reorganisation of local government in London in 1964 this masterplan was abandoned and only the central library and adjoining swimming pool were built. With the opening of Spence's new building the former central library building, about 1 mile further North up the Finchley Road, was converted into the Camden Arts Centre. Spence's library building was renovated in 2003 with some internal alterations and the loss of the furnishings he designed specially for the building, whilst the adjoining swimming pool was demolished entirely, in spite of the fact that it was a Listed Building, as part of a wider redevelopment of Swiss Cottage. The complex includes an exhibition gallery and a sports centre with a large climbing wall.
