The boulevard running through the San Francisco waterfront was once obliterated by a double-decker concrete freeway before the Loma Prieta earthquake of October 1989. The freeway was condemned and the area, including the famous Ferry Building, was restored and developed into a must-see destination for visitors, shoppers, runners, bicyclists and photographers. The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge can be seen coming to earth a short distance to the south.
