It's not often I can get this close either, Cal Kimola. Usually they're nervous and very rarely do I come across as many as I did on this occasion. There must have been about 20-30 of them in a very small area. It was a very low tide, and thousands of mussels were exposed to their probing beaks. What's missing, of course, is their high-pitched "squeal".

Wow, I have never seen one of these up close, I didn't realize their beaks and eyes were such a vivid orange. This is a great shot.
