Der Gendarmenmarkt wird oft als schönster Platz Berlins bezeichnet. Zentrales Gebäude ist das Konzerthaus, das an der Nordseite (im Bild rechts) vom Französischen Dom, auf der Gegenseite vom Deutschen Dom flankiert wird. Der Platz entstand ab 1688 als Teil der Friedrichstadt. König Friedrich I. wies sowohl der lutherischen als auch der französisch-reformierten Gemeinde je einen Platz zum Kirchenbau zu. Beide Kirchenbauten entstanden nach 1701, allerdings ohne die später angebauten Türme. Die eigentliche Gestalt erhielt der Platz unter Friedrich II. mit den beiden identischen Kuppeltürmen neben den Kirchen. Sie wurden in den Jahren 1780–1785 errichtet. Zwischen den beiden Kirchen wurde ein kleines französisches Komödientheater gebaut. Es wurde in den Jahren 1800 bis 1802 durch ein neues Nationaltheater mit 2000 Sitzplätzen ersetzt, brannte jedoch im Jahre 1817 ab. Das an seiner Stelle im Jahre 1821 fertiggestellte königliche Schauspielhaus, das heutige Konzerthaus Berlin, bildet den Mittelpunkt dieses einmaligen Ensembles.
The Gendarmenmarkt is often called the most beautiful square in Berlin. The central building is the concert hall, on the north side (right) is the French cathedral, and on the opposite side the German Cathedral. The place was built from 1688 as part of Friedrichstadt. King Friedrich I showed for both churches (the Lutheran and Reformed Church of France) to a place. Both church buildings was built after 1701, but without the later grown towers. Between the two churches, a small French comedy theater was built. It was replaced in the years 1800 to 1802 by a new National Theater, with seating for 2,000, but burned down in 1817. That on this place in 1821 completed Royal Playhouse, now the Konzerthaus Berlin, built the heart of this unique ensemble.
