Hello Joseph. A very special photo, real nice and a good example on the power of nature forces, a lucky shot, like so many others when it comes to catching lightning, but it is powerfull, thanks for downloading, it is fun to be on the northernmost place on our planet and watch pictures from fare south. Thanks for shaering.Best of luck from Norway.

Thanks for the comment Alf! I agree that this does show how powerful mother nature really is! I love this website!! We can sit at our computer and travel the world and see great photographs! I love all the photos you have on your page...It doesn't snow much where I am...well it doesn't snow at all! cheers joe

Fantastic picture, Joe. Of course it always takes some luck when you try to take pictures of lightning, but when you succeed you really get a very powerful picture. Indeed a perfect catch of the power of nature. Thanks for sharing. Greetings from Belgium.

That had to be a great thunder. I wish to have a luck too and catch some day lightening too!
joseph_hunt, on June 23, 2007, said:
Eddie Dean: Thanks for the comment. The thunder was quite something...it shook my house! You do need luck...but if you put yourself in the right place at the right time - you make your own luck.
cheers joe

This must be the double lightning shot you mentioned in you comment to B. Westberg. This is a great shot, certainly among the best lightning captures I've seen. -->Favorites.
joseph_hunt, on June 26, 2007, said:
hey chip.
this photo was pure luck! i just so happened to have the camera pointed in the right direction and pressed the button at the right time. After i took it i sent it in to the local newspaper and it made the front page!! In hindsight I should have sent it in to a paper with a bigger circulation BUT i guess this website gives me the chance to share it with everyone. once again thanks for the feedback on this and my other photos.
cheers joe

That's amazing! I like how the lightning lights up the rain around it, and the purple clouds.
I've been out every single thunderstorm trying to take a picture of a lightning strike. I managed it once, but didn't even upload that picture because it was all blurry - I jerked the camera trying to take a picture in time! What's the best way to photograph lightning? Time exposure? Fast shutter and fast finger? Tripod? No tripod? What??
joseph_hunt, on July 27, 2007, said:
thanks for the comment phoenix. I didn't really know what i was doing when i took this...i didn't use a tripod (didn't own one!), i let the camera rest on a wooden rail on my back porch. I used a 1 second exposure...because any longer and the camera would have moved a bit for sure (the wind was quite strong). And So i didn't cause any movement by pressing the shutter release button...i put it on a timer so it went off automatically after 3 seconds. I was using my first digital camera and i think i took about 150 photos to get a handfull of lightning shots. This was the best one! If i can give any advice....don't bother trying to anticipate the lightning...just use a digital camera and take shot after shot after shot after shot. This will eventually pay off!
Vasco Pires, on July 27, 2007, said:
Gorgeous!! I had a good ideai! If you put the camera in a tripod and don't move it while taking lots of shots, you could then fuse the best 6 or 7 shots into one using tone mapping technique, you would then have a photo with 6 or 7 (or more) lightning strikes.
Unfortunately Where I live I would have to wait 6 or 7 years just to get a thunderstorm worthy of doing that... :(
Jessica G., on July 27, 2007, said:
You'd need a sturdy tripod to do that, and the clouds would move. I don't know how that would turn out, but I might try it. There's no shortage of thunderstorms in my area, at least at this time of year.

dID you click a switch for the lightning bolts? Because they were perfectly posing for you.
You can even see the traces of the lightning bolts tearing through the clouds
This is more than amazing, and you captured a once in a life time photo which could only be captured in a fraction on a second.
YOU REALLY NAILED IT! CHEERS.

what's the April NPC Jessica? I've never heard of it!
Jessica G., on March 28, said:
The NPC (No Prize Contest) is a monthly competition on the Games and Competitions forum. It's started and run by users, and it is a fun contest and a great way to see other users' photos. Here's the link to the NPC rules thread.
Every month the moderator chooses a new topic, and each user can submit one photo that complies with the topic. April's will be Bad Weather. I think this photo would be an excellent entry!
