Simply sensational! You are really privileged to have seen a polar bear outside a zoo.
Thank you, Gudrun. Actually there were three different polar bears feeding off this carcass during the 30 minutes or so we were allowed to watch from some 150 meters distance. A marvelous and extremely rare experience.
And if you have a dream of visiting Spitsbergen - it isn't that far from Germany to Longyearbyen. Direct flights at a reasonable price from Oslo in the high season if you book ahead. Best time to visit is from mid-February to the end of April for winter with snowmobile and dog sleigh-trips, and August till mid-September for "summer" and boat cruises.
What an incredible experience! Spitsbergen, Greenland and Iceland are definitely on my travel list, though probably not in the next few years- as long I'm up to long flights I'll try to visit the far off places.
Greetings from Hungary,
..a nice picture and funny scratches on the rock ;)
Thank you for the visit and comments Oliver.
And about the funny scratches - the bear isn't standing on a rock, but on a dead whale ;)
Best regards, Joehenri.
Fantastic shot! Lucky you... Greetings from Italy, Elios
Thank you tashimelampo. I agree this was an amazing strike of luck. But after watching through your gallery, and seen some of the places you have been - I would deem you rather lucky as well ;)
Greetings from Norway.
