Gerry, that's exactly what I was thinking. From far away: Is that tree really growing out of the rock? From close up: It is growing out of the rock!

Of course the sandstone in Zion is incredibly porous and rich with both water and minerals. There are places where literal rivers flow within the rock, where two geologic layers meet, and give rise to springs and waterfalls at cliff faces.
