Another proof of the global warming is given here : Those perfectly healthy Banana trees grow in a city whose name starts with a B like Bananas...

Brisbane (Australia) ? Buenos Aires (Agrentina) ? Belem (Brazil) ? Belo Horizonte (Still Brazil) ?

No !

Basel ... ... Switzerland !

Hello Philippe, for me also he is strange, never I imagined to see a banana tree in Switzerland. Here in Belo Horizonte, city where I live, we have many banana trees. It is really the global heating, entering in action... Greetings from Belo Horizonte! Lana

I am curious to know, these banana trees are planted in the yard of its house?

Hi Lana Maria,

(Hehe, see, I quoted your city among the Banana tree climate friendly B-cities :-) )

Those banana trees grow in the Basel City Botanic garden, where specialists know how to maintain exotic (from our point of view) plants.

They have a tropical greenhouse there with awesome tropical plants, but those banana trees indeed grow in the open air.

While those are grown by specialists, non-professionnal gardeners in the area also grow banana trees, as you can see on this picture.

Actually the biggest banana trees I ever saw grew in open air ... in Germany (they were so 5-7 meters tall) !

However, those banana trees (almost) never produce bananas as every winter, we have to cut them down and to hide them from the cold by covering them with straw... and some extreme cold winters (with temperatures going as low as -15°c through -25°c ... we have such every 10 years) kills those outdoors banana trees even if they were properly covered with Straw.

I guess that indeed there are many - naturally growing - Banana trees in Belo Horizonte... did U shoot some ?

Hi Philippe, It is very interesting to know that, in a country of so cold climate, plants of tropical climate if develop, even in greenhouses… I loved the photos of link! I do not know if I understood correctly, you to it would like, that me to do photos of the banana trees?

And they are by far not the Tallest I saw in Basel. One by the border with Saint-Louis was 10 meter tall and carried bananas !

"carried bananas" - That is really amazing!

This is the global warm up in action... but it's nothing new...

30 million years ago, our area would have been tropical, and even northern Scandinavia would have had a mediterranean climate...
