Barrie Road - the Racemens Cottage

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

Generally known of as a racemans cottage, this little house in its original form was more likely a semi-permanent house for the management of the gangs of navies digging the race and the carpenters building the three large trestle aqueducts nearby. I don't think it was a Borough Council owned racemans cottage although there is adequate local evidence that a person who lived there in the early 20thC was employed on race works. By my definition a racemen was a fixed term employee whose remuneration was in effect a salary and whose responsibilities were set out and restricted to a defined section of the race.
