Dear Panoramio friends,

On September 20th, 2009, an update of the panoramio.com engine took place. All the changes are summed up on this thread. However, one capital change did almost get unnoticed, and for many of us, once we'll notice it, it will mean very bad news.

This change, is the disparition of the "all" tab, replaced by an upcoming "recent" tab that shall only contain recently reviewed pictures on the panoramio map we all use for picture browsing on this site.

This means that, after a few time, all non selected for google earth pictures will get very hard to find on this site, as the main way to find them was to browse the earth map under the "all" tab. I will not publish here my opinion why this change occured (I have one, but I hope I'm wrong on this issue), nor will I challenge the google earth selection criterias here. All I'm asking - kindly but firmly - is the return of that "all" tab the panoramio.com team decided to get rid of.

I'm also asking why this change was made as removing a working function from any given system is never, but really never, an improvement. I - and several other Panoramiers - asked the same in the above given thread, without getting an answer from the panoramio.com officials.

Please note also that the disparition of the "all" tab was never refered to as a bug they will fix with the return of this tab (in that case, I would have waited for the fix) but clearly as a deliberate "improvement".

I think that, while most selected for google earth pictures are great, many, but really many, of the non selected ones are great also, and I see no reason to sentence them to digital oblivion... or atleast to "hard discovery". Those non selected ones are also very often very informative about what a place is. The overall panorama of a coconut beach (a typical google earth selectable picture) tells me as much about a given place as the close up macro (sorry, no macros on GE) on the spider that runs on it's trunk.

Once again, I am not challenging the google earth selection criterias, but I am challenging the disparition of the best, most user friendly and coolest way to browse all pictures from a given place in here, the "all" tab.

I invite you, if you agree with me, to post your comment in this thread, telling the panoramio people you want the "all" tab back, and also to include the picture you're currently viewing to your own gallery by downloading it and reposting it as one of your pictures. I know this behaviour is usually forbidden, but in this case, and within the frame of this campaign to challenge this so called "improvement", you have my rightholder's written authorisation .

Let's unite to challenge this "improvement" !

P.S. :

I chose this picture for several reasons :

  • It's the reason we're all here : we like photos because we have eyes.

  • It's based on one of my photos : I therefore face no copyright issue.

  • Altough I think it's nice, it does not meet the google earth criterias, and therefore will be hard to find on the new panoramio, because it is a macro.

  • If you closely look at the eye, you'll see it naturally (no CGI here) reflects... the panorama that was in front of that eye

Nice and clever picture of yours! You're right about that:

  • If you closely look at the eye, you'll see it naturally (no CGI here) reflects... the panorama that was in front of that eye.

I can see you, standing in front of that woman, taking that picture of her eye!

Congratulations! :)

P.S. Let's hope that our prayers will get heard and the ALL tab option will return!

Now that we are left with only the "Your Photos" and "Popular" tabs, the question is, how does a photo become popular if nobody can see it and select it?

Philippe Meisburger, on October 24, said:

It won't.

There is now more than 1 month ago that the "all" tab has been removed, and nothing, not even the promised "recent" tab is back.

For me, the cup is full.

I'll migrate to Flickr or Picasa very soon and will DELETE ALL MY PICTURES HERE except for my 2 protest pics, and I'll add a new one with the URL to my new gallery.

Do what you want, but consider how we were treated here in this case. In other words, if you agree with me, follow me on another site.

I tried all possible diplomacy, nothing worked, so I'll go to their concurrents and tell all my friends NOT to post on Panoramio (exactly the opposite I told them until that so called "update").

Flickr and/or Picasa thanks you all @ the panoramio team for that enlightened idea of having such a disatrous update.

To me, your site is DEAD AND BURRIED.

Phillippe, please don't delete all your photos in anger! While I agree with you that the Pano team has not treated the user community very well, and that they are disorganized and so on ... but still you may regret a hasty decision to delete your lovely photos. If you need a break from Pano, then I don't blame you! But don't delete your photos, at least not yet.
