Scientific Name: Saccharum spontaneum L. Family: Poaceae; (Bengali/Hindi Name: Kans, Kansi, Kas). Habitat: Tropical and subtropical, in a wide range of habitats including marshes, stream banks, sand dunes; tolerates many soil types and moisture levels; a weed of roadsides, waste areas. It is a perennial grass, growing up to three meters in height, with spreading rhizomatous roots. In some places, Kans grass is harvested to thatch roofs or fence vegetable gardens.It is believed to have Ayurvedic medical properties. .
