This memorial was unveiled Tuesday 21st October 1890, the anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar. The foundation stone was laid on 18th July 1888, the 300th anniversary of the sighting of the Spanish Armada from Plymouth Hoe. The pedestal is about 40 feet in height, and is surmounted by a bronze figure of a calm and dignified Britannia, 11 feet 6 inches in height bearing a trident, sword and shield. By her side is a lion with the attitude of watchfulness. Britannia was hoisted into position October 18th 1890. Running around the base are a series of bronze shields bearing the arms of the various cities and towns which sent ships, men and money to aid the fleet in the defence of the country in 1588.
