Brings back memories. This used to be 40 Army Engineer Support Group barracks for the British Army. I served there as a tradesman in 21 EBW from 1984 to 1989 and thoroughly loved Willich and the people. Left a few broken hearts behind when I left :) I see the water tower (The Pimmel as we used to call it) is looking even more decrepit these days and leaning more. Shame no-one is looking after it as it is the local landmark. Still, happier times now that we are buddies with the former commies and not pointing guns at each other. Maybe interesting to point out that one of the civilian guards drowned in the pond (where we tested watertightness of landing craft) next to the Pimmel because his guard dog wouldn't let anyone near him to rescue him. I think that was in the late 70's. Spooky place to wander round at night. There are also extensive tunnels under the camp from the war days that are really interesting if you can manage to get down there. Probably all blocked up now because the authorities didn't like us poking around and finding souvenirs. The old sergeants mess as you enter the camp is a cracking old building that I never had the chance to investigate.
