After the Civil War, a local beauty was wooed by a wealthy man from Southern Maryland, by the name of Suit. She agreed to marry him on the condition that he build her a castle. So he built her a castle. This is a half scale replica of Berkeley Castle in England. He died just before the castle was completed, but she lived in it for many years, while slowly dissipating his wealth. It was open to the public as a tourist attraction for many years, but is now a private residence, and it is now closed to the public. To the credit of the present owners, they have done much to improve the grounds and exterior appearance.
