If you zoom in on the map, you can see that there's a dock for a carferry. Before the breakwater was built, the dock was pretty exposed, as you can imagine! And even though this is no ocean, the Great Lakes are large and can get pretty rough. Hence this solution.

I will second your statement about how rough the Great Lakes can get. We are right at the western end of Lake Ontario. If we get a serious winter storm with an easterly wind I have seen Lake Ontario with waves which would not be embarassed in any ocean.

I guess the picture does not show a potential Port Dover.

Each year we make the four-hour trip by carferry across Lake Michigan (not to this small ferry dock!). For much of the trip, there is no land in sight.

Thank you, Steven, for your testimony. This location is important only because the carferry provides the supply link for a good-sized inhabited island.

I have no real concept of the size of Lake Michigan - but the land I can see in the distance is just Plum Island I gather :)))

Yes, Plum Island is out there. There's a Coast Guard station on it. This stretch of water between the end of the Door Peninsula and large Washington Island isn't called "Death's Door" for no reason!
