Built in the C17th Genoese style by Jean-Baptiste Gubernatis this villa was completed in 1685 by his grandson who was president of the Senate in Nice and the Duke of Savoy's ambassador to Spain, Portugal and Rome. It remained in private ownership until 1950 when it was acquired by the Municipality of Nice and became a museum in 1963 housing a selection of Matisse's work donated by the artist and members of his family.
