The obelisk is the oldest an tallest (32 n.) in Rome. It originally was erected by Pharao Thutmosis III in the 15th. century BC at the Amon Temple in Theben, Egypt. Emperor Constantine the Great intended it to be brought to Constantinople, but the obelisk stranded in Alexandria. His son Konstantius II brought it to Rome in 357 on a boat demanding 300 roarsmen and erected it in the Circus Maximus It was places in front of S. Giovanni in 1588.
