a lovely piece of medieval 12-13c engineering. Water was brought from an unmaneable river (The Dodder) to a maneagable one (The Poddle) The Dodder w very prone to flash floods and so was not suitable for use as a mill driver. Also where the posddle joined the Liffey it was tidal and useless for drinking purposed. The Poddle was suitable for both drinking and for driving mill whels. The problem was it was becoming inadequate to cater for the growing population in Dublin. The solution was to transfer water out of the Dodder into the Poddle. Probably a surveyor from St Thomas Court, with experience in France or England, identified this waterfall as the place to do it. A weir was constructed and a channel was dug to the poddle. A sluice gate controlled the flow.
