Trieste - ITALY

For 41 years the Barcolana Autumn Cup has been the regatta for everyone. From huge sailing yachts to small boats, from professional yachtsmen and women to the passionate amateur, the regatta is a celebration of the sea and full of competitive spirit. Some of those taking part in the race sailboats which boast the latest marine technology, with ever-larger sails to overcome Trieste's dead calm and canting keels to fight against the Bora, Trieste's famous wind. Whatever the weather, the event is always eagerly awaited on the annual date of the second Sunday of October. Every one of the 1782 boat owners and boats that take part in the Barcolana has a different tale to tell, but they are all brought together by Trieste's yearly race, situated in the gulf where the Mediterranean meets the centre of Europe.

Slovenian yacht Maxi Jena of Mitja Kosmina won the 41st edition Trieste's Barcolana Autumn Cup, the most crowded regatta in the Mediterranean and this year, 1782 boats of all types and sizes from 5 to 30 metres signed up for the race.

At 10 A.M., the breathtaking start of 1782 entrants on the same start-line between Barcola and the Castle of Miramare, took place under a blue sky and a warm shiny sun. A difficult beginning, due to a very light and shifty wind; sailing tactics and strategies were decisive among the favourites.

TUTTATRIESTE VITRANI took the lead, but was overtaken by MAXI JENA before the first mark in a light under five knot winds. The second leg was windward and the wind rose became constant, a nice 10-11 knots Mistral started to blow.

MAXI JENA flew ahead and left a big gap behind.

The finale was really exciting with MAXI JENA of Mitja Kosmina who victoriously crossed the finish line at 12.06 P.M. after two wonderful hours of race, winning Barcolana Autumn Cup 2009, after seven second places in the past years, ahead of IDEA ESTEL and TUTTATRIESTE VITRANI.

Tactical and strategic choices at the start made the difference.

The prize for the best start went to TUTTATRIESTE VITRANI, who picked the right side on the start line, and the right time to take the lead, taking advantage of its agility in very light wind conditions.

MAXI JENA gybes at the right moment, attacks and overtakes TUTTATRIESTE VITRANI 300 metres from the first mark.

After rounding the first mark of Barcolana Autumn Cup 41st edition, MAXI JENA holds the lead, ahead of TUTTATRIESTE VITRANI, FANATIC third, AMORI fourth, IDRUSA fifth, SHINING sixth and the others behind.

Behind them, the show is really exciting, with 1776 boats which slowly sail with a light breeze.

After the first mark the fleet spreads out.

The second is a windward leg in which the wind becomes constant, a nice 10-11 knots Mistral. MAXI JENA catches up easily thanks to its power and length on the windward side.

Tacking was reduced to minimum and the boats reach the second mark. The final leg starts with MAXI JENA hoisting the gennaker and flying towards the finish line, 3 minutes ahead of the second, IDEA ESTEL, and 6 minutes of TUTTATRIESTE VITRANI.

The last sailboat arrived at the finish line at 5.15 P.M.

The great spectacle was the huge fleet taking part in the Barcolana 2009 Autumn Cup: owing to a constant wind, it is a record edition also for the number of competitors who finished the race regularly. Along the waterfront, in the city, the party continues, with over 300.000 people who came to watch the race.

Final Placings 1st MAXI JENA 2nd IDEA ESTEL 3rd TUTTATRIESTE VITRANI 4th IDRUSA 5th AMORI Shining was disqualified for early departure.

A gyoztes MAXI JENA, 12:06 perckor, két izgalmas òra utàn ért a célvonalra a Victoria vilàgitòtorony elé, amit àgyùlovés jelzett és tuzijàtékkal is koszontotték, ami a kovetkezo képeim egyikén is làtszik.

I like your photo. The colour of the water seems to be deeper than the sea. Thank you for inviting me to your group arches. I gladly accepted.
