King Shaka International Airport - The South End of the main Terminal - Nov 2009
The main runway (and only for the present) is now for all intents complete other than for the landing lights (a small but important detail!) and the perimeter fence is currently being put up. As may be noted there are 12 air bridges serving aprons Alfa and Beta facing the runway from the main terminal. Apron Charlie, that will serve the large double-decker Airbus A380s, is towards the rear of the terminal on the side of the currently unusable ramp to the upper level, while Apron Delta is some distance away at the side of the Trade Port near the Control Tower, which is situated approximately in the centre of the site. The airport is set to open in June 2010 for commercial flights. Although the original intension was simultaneously to open the airport prior to the 2010 Soccer World Cup and close the Durban International Airport (Louis Botha), the stated current intention now is to only close Durban International Airport after the World Cup, i.e. there will be two open airports serving Durban. Guess some Heathrow Terminal 4 concerns!! Virginia Airport it seems is still to remain open despite original statements some years back that the two could not operate is such close proximity and the operation would have to move to a reduced Durban International Airport.
