A huge forest fire on the Curonian Spit broke out during the afternoon of May 4, 2006. In a few hours’ time, 150 hectares of forest were already in flames. By the time the last smoldering embers were extinguished on May 9, some 250 hectares of forest had been devastated. Energy supply to Neringa residents was temporarily terminated due to the fire. It was the largest fire in Smiltyne in recent years. A decade ago, 60 hectares of forest burned during a fire on the Curonian Spit.

Jurgis

Interesting angle and a nice shot! OK, my new photo's of my recent tour of that beautiful semi-desert country Namibia, are on display in my gallery at last! I have travelled over 5000 Kms in mid September. If you are interested and have some time available, you are most welcome to visit my gallery! Friendly greetings from Cape Town, South Africa! Johan

Thank you Johan, nice to hear from you again:)...

Best wishes to all, Jurgis

A very sad story, Jurgis, yet a beautiful picture!

I can imagine what the forest fire ment to the Neringa residents - in my neighbourhood there are smaller and larger fires every summer. A few years ago, it came quite near to our house, it was really frightening. This year, the worst was over when I returned from holidays, but the fire fighters were busy for another week. We could watch them from a secure distance ...

Best regards, Christa
