Local tradition is that it was built as a gun turret after the Jacobite Rising, but really it's just a folly and part of Capability Brown's landscaping of 1769. Dressed stone not required.

Thanks jf. I am so glad I took two film cameras with me this day as I hadn't closed the back properly on one of them and lost the whole film. My good lady, spuggy, got the best shots on this day but I am happy with a few of my shots.
