The Grand Seminary

The first part was built in 1768 – 1770, and in 1876 – 1878 another wing was added to the baroque building, giving it its present appearance. It is now housing the Theological Faculty of the Comenius University of Bratislava. Inside there are two chapels, which are richly decorated with frescoes and with a valuable altar painting of St. Ladislaus. In the building of the Grand Seminary is situated the valuable Diocesan Library, protected as a National Cultural Monument. It was established on the initiative of Bishop Roškováni as a copy of the Széchenyi National Library in Budapest. It was opened in 1885 in the presence of the Austrian Emperor, Franz Jozef I.
The collection of books consists of some sixty-six thousand volumes, 76 of which are first prints (incunables) from the 16th century, and around 100 are different manuscripts mostly in Latin, German and Hungarian languages. The Neo-Classicist building of the Grand Seminary is regarded as one of Nitra´s architectural treasures.
