Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII after his attempt to reach the South Pole (He only missed it by 114 miles or 190 km), but he is best known for Voyage of the James Caird – a trip in a lifeboat – after the loss of of the good ship Endurance - from Elephant Island to South Georgia Island.
