steandeb,
That is new snow.
In the part of the Rocky Mountains where I live (Idaho, and formerly Utah), snow usually begins to appear on the mountains in September.
The snowline gradually lowers with passing storms. However, this is not a smooth process. For example, the mountaintops are often whitened by a storm in September, but after a week all of the snow melts. A new storm will place the snow lower. All, or most of it might melt again, and so forth.
Some winters there is not much snow in the valleys. Others it is half a meter deep or more.
I'm sorry to hear of the flooding in Cubria. Steady rain of that magnitude is very rare in Utah and Idaho.

Hi Steve and Ralph -- it does seem like the west coast has been getting more severe winter storms the last few years -- and more drought in the summer -- fits the pattern predicted by some global warming models.
Happy trails, Bruce
