I just love these little fellas, they are so cute and tiny, they seem to swim a lot further under the water than other ducks.
Thanks Dianne! They're really pretty unusual little ducks, and they swim underwater about like cormorants do. Their beaks are sawtoothed and have a hook at the end - completely different from good ol' mallards!
To see a pretty amazing close up of them, google 'canon hooded merganser' Right now the top result is the Canon users group forum with 2 really amazing shots posted last week. (I can't seem to make a direct link.)
Wow!! I've never seen those anywhere, even on television or the internet!
Don't go encouraging those Canon-users, by the way.
Thanks kamalyn I will have a look after we get back from our neighbours little girl's 1st b/day party, Bob is sooooooo excited.
They're sure cool! Is the one with the lighter colored head a youngster?
Party on Bob!
Well, Who - could be they're there, but when you look they've disappeared under water, and don't come back up til you look away. They've got extra-strong anti-camera radar! But they're sure worth stalking to try for a shot!
Thanks Guy ! And I've got no idea about the grayer one in the back. Haven't found anything that discusses a coloring like that. It sure looks younger, and the 'hairdo' is so poofy I'd think it was maybe a juvenile male, but I think even juvy male's eyes are yellow.
Well, Dianne - hope you and Bob went easy on the hard liquor at the party, and no embarrassing dancing on the table!
They're rather a big-headed lot, aren't they? Really unusual looking, and a great catch, kamaly. The gray one's probably a cousin from out of town.
The colour of the water is pretty special too - what a great background.
over all love the tones in the shot different colour headdress different gender?
LOL, now I'm really jealous of Bits for getting this close-up shot that I thought was too un-crisp for my page, ha-ha.
Thanks n1w, Cal, and steve! Yeah, these guys do show up in November when they color-coordinate with everything else that's brown, except for those flamboyant males! (Steve I see you've already found your answer.) They must use up all the family's budget for the beauty parlor, leaving the girls to be stuck with their unruly drab hairdo.
They are soooo pretty. Love the hair and make-up.
Laurel... you are right about the hair and make-up. They look like a rock band from the 1980s. :P
Nice grouping, Bits.
Is this Huey, Dewey and Louie? with Uncle Donald in the previous frame?
Thanks Laurel211, whoelia, and Tery - LOL to you all! But Tery - these are two gals and a guy, so I'm not sure who they are! Maybe Jack Tripper, Janet and Chrissie?
Thanks Bruce! It's rewarding that peopl appreciate the photo even though it's sure not the sharpest shot of them out there. But they're so fast moving that I've found this shot is the only way to really get to see the detail. Seasons Greetings to you, Mrs. Moose and your strapping Moosling!
Thanks Ritva ! They really are adorable.
Great shot! Y*!
Now I think these guys may have been what a could see way out in the pond this fall but never get close enough for a clear shot. You are right....if you even slow down in a car as you drive by they are gone. Congratulation on the elusive capture!
I love these guys...it looks like Walt Disney has a hand in designing them. Great capture, congrats! peargrin
Thanks joyfotos and peargrin ! They're such cute birds, and they sure do look hand painted. Especially now that ice is concentrating the birds into select areas on the lakes and rivers, I've been able to get a lot of even closer shots of hoodies, and lots of other odd ducks. But this photo that I was pretty dubious about posting is still my favorite.
