This female Karner blue butterfly was captive bred at The Toledo Zoo for release at the Kitty Todd Preserve. The Zoo, working with The Nature Conservancy, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, reintroduced the Karner blue to Ohio in 1998. Over 5,000 butterflies have been released since at various locations in the Oak Openings.
