Dear Aubrey and David,

I like your caption very much, Aubrey. This was in the week that the whales left their calving waters and began their southern migration. And it was towards the end of our stay in Tonga.

David, I understand that the population of humpbacks that migrate to Albany and those that migrate to the Coral Sea and these that calve in Tongan waters never meet one another. They stay in separate areas of the Southern Ocean as well. And did you know that the northern hemisphere humpbacks (same species) are dark underneath? I hope to visit Albany one day, so it will have to be in calving season!

Happy New Year.

I can feel your joy from here, Axl. I think the photo expresses my delight. Be up close to a whale for me must be like completing a climb to the crater of Mt Fuji for you!

Thank you, Vuk. This experience is a highlight for anyone who finds that the whale comes this close to your boat! Never to be forgotten.

I am glad you like it.

Thanks Douglas. I swim between the whalers and the whales like a good shepherd until the whalers take me hostage or harpoon me!
