Hi Gil, your infrared shots are amazing. I read your forum posting on infrared photography. I started taking infrared shots this week. I use a Nikon Coolpix 950 with a B+W 093 filter attached. I took my first two shots with a tripod and they turned out all right. I then tried shooting handheld and, to my amazement, they turned out all right also. I only shot subjects that were front lit or side lit by strong low-angle sunlight. Each of the photos had a blue cast which I removed in CS3. I have read that the blue cast does not appear in infrared shots taken with a Nikon Coolpix 950 with the original firmware. I could compse the shots with the viewfinder, although I could see the edge of the filter in the bottom right as I was framing up. The camera has a 28mm thread on the lens and I was using a 37mm filter and a step-up ring. I have published the shots in the photoblog on my website.

Best wishes from Scotland,

Hi Porter,

after taking a look at your site, I found that you did a very good job of explaining IR photography there and that your results are way better than mine. Maybe if I could achieve the same results I'd still be taking IR photos, but I just lost patience and am in need of a better filter for my camera.

Keep clicking,

Gil

Hi Gil,

Assuming you don't want to remove internal IR cut filter from your camera, you might consider using a different camera. The best digital cameras with which to take infrared pics are: the Nikon Coolpix 900 or 950, the Olympus Camedia C-2020Z, the Minolta Dimage 7 (not the 7i or the 7hi) and the Nikon D1. It is unlikely your local camera shop will still be stocking these models, but I am sure there will be some available second hand.

Best wishes,
