Actually, the building shown is the Presidential Mansion, known widely in Fiji as Government House (Fijian 'Vale-ni-Kovana' - literally Home of the Governor) even before declaration of the republic, where it served as Governor-General's residence, and pre-independence as the Governor's Mansion.

The President and Vice-President's Offices are contained in an unattached wing to the North of the residence (left out of picture). The main entrance is facing South and the sea and main gates are to the West.

A beautiful building indeed, no doubt built by the Brits all those years ago. So, why can't the Fiji Government commission the construction of more buildings this? Nice to look at and they last for ever.

I was a schoolboy back in the fifties, and Sir Ronald Garvey lived here as Governor of Fiji. In the early sixties I arrived in the UK as a young army recruit. Sir Ronald was by then the governor of the Isle of Man and sent a welcome message in Fijian to all army units where Fijians were stationed. What a thoughtful gesture, what a man !!
