I don't know El Tatio. I went to Chile only once in a guide trip to conventional touristic places. The falls in the picture and many other in Brasil are formed at faults in basaltic rocks named Serra Geral formation. The most famous is Iguaçu Falls near the triple border of Brasil, Argentina and Paraguay. The Basaltic rocks for the canyons here.
