Very very sadly, this quirky waterfront building in Boston, with its wonderful Lobster weathervane, burned down this morning.
The Lobstavane is no more, along with fresh lobster to buy on the run for lunch. (At least I stopped and admired it just the day before yesterday.) and so probably coming soon to this site: a 40 story tower!...a sad day all around! :'<
as an update a few months later: no new 40 story tower! the lobster pound will be re-built, and the lobster from the weathervane, while grounded and a bit battered and worse for the wear, is back, greeting everyone who passes by.
No, No the family said they will rebuild? but i'm sure they are not made of stone and are wicked awesome mayor will mostliky push for the firg'in 40 story building :( Nice pic's by the way!
Did they rebuild? Time for an update.
lol, Tery - the ThermaDoor photo is the current state of re-building. There have been reports that they were developing site plans for a relatively modest building with a lot of the character of the old building complex. But then last yearthey put the property up for sale, and the city's zoning plans for the area treat it as a development parcel. As much of a wonderful surprise as the old building was at that location, with the old building gone the family is sitting on a huge land value, and from a financial stability point of view it makes way more sense to sell. It would be hokey to rebuild a building like the original. Haven't heard any up date about any sale, though.
But still, I'd hate to see development there because now it's a view corridor out to the Fan Pier and South Boston.
Hi kamaly thanks for the updates. Yes I was your 400th Pano viewer on the Thermadoor photo. Yes I see what you mean about i being hokey to redo the orginal - but perhaps something retro to capture the flavour of the original? in the meantime enjoy the view.
