Thank´s a lot for your kind comment, geomanncer :-) Yes, everybody like to keep his memories about Heidelberg. It´s a very romantical City. To which place you have been go too in the Black Forest area ? Can you remember this?

Greetings from Germany

I stayed with a lady friend near Baden-Baden. The first time was around Easter 1996 (I think) and more recently in 2002. I flew to Stuttgart the 2nd time and caught a train to Baden-Baden, but when I was due to arrive, an announcer said that, because the train was late, it wouldn't be stopping there and would go straight on to the next major town/city south which is in Switzerland. I was in the gents toilet and felt the train slowing down to stop, so quickly got off the train and caught the next train going back up to Baden-Baden.

I had to spend a night there and call my friend the next day for her to collect me and take me to her house. It was a hot summer and I remember being stung by mosquitos on my feet. Apart from that, I also went into Karlsruhe with her daughter to the Zoo, but on my way back to Stuttgart, I had time to spend a few hours in Heidelberg and visited the Heidelberg printing museum across the road from the train station.

My first time, I flew to Strasbourg which I would like to visit again sometime. This is a city I know that has changed hands between France and Germany a few times over the course of time, but I am interested in the mediaeval parts of the city over 200 years old.

There are now very few parts of Nottingham which can truly be called 'mediaeval', because of all the development that has happened over the years.

I see, that you had a nice time in south-west Germany. Next time you have go to Freiburg too. Freiburg is near to Basel in Switzerland. It is the warmest region in Germany. I can remember on summer 2003, the temperature were climb over 40 degrees and we had very high humidity at that time.

I think everything is changing and sometimes we change too much and loose something of our identity. But everybody is still knowing Notthingham :-)

I think it may well have been 2003 when I visited my friend. It was unusually warm and humid that year, which may explain the mosquitos. Nottingham is a 'modern' city, which means that it is under development all the time, so little remains of it's historic past.

to studio4t1,

We have one currently in use in the Old Market Square in the city centre. Must get down there to take a shot. The weather is fine today, so would be a good time. They've created a beach in the Square with a few rides a paddling pool, and food stalls. It's like a little seaside town.

Sounds nice. Dose that mean this one has gone

Hi studio4t1, No, it's still there, although it will probably be gone at the end of September, so I have to move fast to get a picture of the arrangement.

PS: They actually laid tons of sand down to create the 'beach'.

PPS: this one is from a photo I took at our Annual Goose Fair (arguably the largest travelling fair in Europe, certainly in the UK.) This one will probably return for this year's event.

The Goose Fair has existed for over 700 years.

Here's a link for Goose Fair.

Hi geomanncer Glad it's still there. Shame it's going though. I bet that's quite a site, tons of sand to make an artificial beach.

I checked out the Goose Fair it is very big & 700 years it's definitely old.

In spite of the current, and past, poor 'British Summer', the artificial seaside has proved popular with Nottingham people, and when they've cleared it all away, we will probably have a 'German Market' or some other attraction for natives and visitors alike.

Around mid October, we have the Nottingham Beer Festival which is now held at the Nottingham Castle grounds. Last year's event proved very popular with visitors and natives alike.

Sometime around Christmas and into the New Year, we should see the return of the Enterprise Wheel, or as we call it, 'The Nottingham Eye'.

Hi Sehnwirmal, Again, many thanks for your kind comments.

This was taken at our Annual Goose Fair which occurs every year during the first week in October (usually from the 1st Wednesday and stays until the Sunday. This year SHOULD be from Wednesday 5th to Sunday 9th.

This year will be the 717th year since it's beginnings in 1294.

Here's a link to it's history.
