This is the Reagan (CVN-76). A Nimitz class carrier. The Midway (CV-41) is parked as a museum in San Diego. The Hornet is parked/moored in Alameda as a museum. A mere 1.88 miles southeast of here.

excuse me 1.88 miles southwest

This is the USS Midway, CVA 41 - MY FIRST SHIP. Look at the number on the forward deck! The Ronald Reagan HAS NEVER BEEN in Oakland. My Grandson brought the Reagan from Norfolk to San Diego. He said the Reagan has never been to Oakland, and he should know as he just got off.

This is the Midway, it came to here to be stripped and prepared for musem before it went down to San Diego in Jan 2004. And I find it hard to beleive your grandson drove CVN 76 from norfork. Is he the Admirial? You probally mean he was one of the many on board while in route.

The carrier in the satellite photo was parked there for a few months and then moved on, she was painted and had minor repairs before being towed to Sandog as a museum. She left on December 31st 2003 and there's a bunch of mostly bad quality pictures at http://midwaysailor.com/midwayoakland/oakland4.html

This picture is NOT the Ronald Reagan (CVN-76). It is the USS Midway (CVB-41)... see the bow numbers. If it were the USS Ronald Reagan, it wound have a big 76 on the bow. Also, notice the crude deck dimensions. This was an overhauled carrier (1957). See: http://www.navsource.org/archives/02/41.htm For the USS Ronald Reagan, see: http://www.navsource.org/archives/02/76.htm

At the time all this Google Earth was being done the Uss Ronald Reagan was still being built in Newport News. A little north of her you can also see the George Bush under construction. I also Found the Uss Iwo Jima (LHD 7) in the same area.
