Crisp and Clear in Whitby

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

Taken during a very cold spell covering the period of Christmas festivities of 2009, a very white Christmas indeed.

The grave stones on the east cliff, adjacent to the XII century St Mary's Parish church, can be seen leaning towards the steep valley sides. Over hundreds of years, the land has slipped inexorably taking the graves along with it. In fact, there are a few instances where ancient graves, hundreds of years old have slipped off the edge of the cliff, exposing the mortal remains for all to see. Of course, they were respectfully re-interred elsewhere.

Erosion of the cliffs in front of the church has caused the bell tower to lean outwards, this is quite noticeable in the shot.

As a matter of interest, the Parish church is at least 100 years older than the ruined XIIIc abbey standing nearby.
