This fine equestrian statue of Juan de Onate sits in front of the Onate building north of San Juan pueblo. Feeling run high in New Mexico between the Indians and the Spanish descendants. A few years ago one of Onate's feet went missing being sawed off. This was clearly reflecting on Onate's part in the trial of the Acoma Indians where the males of that tribe were sentenced to have one foot severed.
