John, Thank you for the comments. You may have caught the title of this one? Let me emphasize the I think part :) I use a field guide to identifying wild flowers printed by the National Audubon Society. There are several characteristics shown here of the Goatsbeard they present but I can't say 100% for sure about it.

My vote is on a Passiflora (again) or Passion Flower Kevin

It is however, most unusual looking. Were did you find it, coast or inland?

Jethro, yep, I concede now that Passiflora has been mentioned!

I found this one at the Cowans Ford Wildlife Refuge about 10 miles from here. The other was only a mile or so from the house along a greenway. I'm now wondering if I've ever seen these in the coastal plain?
