Deserted Quays!! @ St Anne's Staith

Not so many years ago, this harbour would have looked very different. There were upwards of twenty large fishing vessels equipped mainly for trawling the once rich fishing grounds of the North Sea.

Today, the trawlers have largely disappeared with only a few local vessels now based in Scottish ports where they are able to fish Northern/Icelandic/Norwegian waters where the catches are still quite plentiful.

A few crabbers still fish out of Whitby where good money can be made from the lobster fishery.

Crabs caught off Whitby are often plentiful but are not popular with fish buyers since the crab tends to be dirty and discoloured because of the muddy nature of the sea-bed.

Any one who has watched the "Deadliest Catch" on TV will know that only the best looking, clean crab is suitable for the open market.
