Hi 《阿鵬》B@ngk☺k, nice streetview!! I tried to figure out where it could be, but nothing to read, except your label!! Cheers pivatana

Hi pivatana, it's called Chaoyang District, a former city, which was merged into the City of Shantou. It's my grandma's birthplace. It was a very poor area in the past since fruits and rice were very hard to grow. During WWII, the city was severely destroyed by both the Japanese and the Allies' air raids. When my grandparents witnessed a lot of disturbing pictures of casualties. Those who survived got to rescue their neighbours. My grandparents had had to go through starvation!

I thought Chaoyang Dirstict was in Beijing, does it have any meaning in Chinese? Best wishes, Fai

Hi Fai, your memory is very good!! Both Beijing and Shantou's Chaoyang are written with the same characters.

Best wishes to the U.K. and Taiwan

Hi 《阿鵬》B@ngk☺k, do you know anything about the lost pictures spread all over the PAN users and what about the access to the forum. When I try to enter the forum I got only an "Bad Request"!! Thanks a lot Cheers pivatana

ƤōƝƓ on January 5, 2010

pivatana, no kidding. I have not had or been aware of any problem accessing the forum or lost pictures so far. I am entering the forum now and it is working fine. T

Hello 《阿鵬》B@ngk☺k, I was moved and saddened by your description of what your grandparents had to endure during WWII. I pray that one day all people can live together in peace. Thank you for posting this photo and sharing how meaningful it is to you. I voted. Best regards, Steve

ƤōƝƓ on January 6, 2010

Hi Steve, thank you for taking interests in the history. Most baby boomers and later generations like me have heard about a lot of similar stories but we didn't feel much moved by it until my grandma recalled her own experiences. It seems to be universal for people from any part of the world who have lived through that era.

Best wishes to Massachusetts, USA ~《阿鵬》B@ngk☺k
