This is a late harvested dessert wine with a special, unique taste. It was first mentioned around 1630 by the wine-maker of I. György Rákóczi, the Prince of Transylvania and his wife Zsuzsanna Lórántffy. It is called: the Wine of the Kings !

Hi there Zsanna, from Tokai in Cape Town, South Africa!!

I just had to tell you about our suburb which is named Tokai after the delicious dessert wine in your photograph.

The spelling has been slightly altered over the centuries, but the same cultivar grapes were imported and grown in our valley in 1680+ and South African Tokai Dessert Wine was produced. Here is a photo of the manor house of the Tokai vineyards.

I am so thrilled to see your photo of the original "Wine of the Kings". Thank you so much for sharing this.

Warm greetings, Hazel, Tokai

Dear Hazel, I'm so glad for your lovely comment. Nice to know, that you know the origine of the name !

Once I was personly there, in Tokai Forest,(~M3) saw some nice property from outside, but nobody knew the connection to the Hungarian Tokaj. ( On the bottle Tokaji means : from Tokaj - it is an agglitunative language)

Are you sure about the date, isn't it too early (1680 - Jan van Riebeek's time ) Do you know the story maybe, who brought the vine-branches to SA ?

Has any wine-making and wine-growing exist there todays? I visited Stellenbosh, Boschendal wineries, and I loved all the Cape Dutch-style in the area. Thank you for the pic about the manor house.

You can read more about Tokaji's history. Thanks again for your kind words, I appreciate it a lot !!

Warm greetings from cold Budapest,

Zsuzsanna

Hello Hazel, I would appreciate so much if you have an answer about the question: what way the Tokaj wine branches got to SA. I was searching on the net, but didn't find anything about it !

I hope, you have lovely nice weather in Tokai...

Warm greetings, Zsuzsanna
