I read that the peat fire was always burning in these homes so while it may have been snug and warm it sounds very smoky. Could you stand up in this part of the house? This is what is left after the thatch roof is gone, isn't it?

JF, yes these homes would be smokey and yes I think you could just stand up in the centre where the thatched roof was highest, there is still a full village of these blackhouses elsewhere on the island which I didn't have time to see. You can rent them out for vacations LINK best wishes Azzy
